For I am not ashamed of the gospel,^[a] because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. ¹⁷ For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith,^[b] just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.

Romans 1:16–17

Rooted in the Power of the Gospel

After introducing himself and explaining his desire to visit the believers in Rome, Paul gives us what could be called the thesis statement of the entire book of Romans. Romans 1:16–17 summarizes the message that Paul will continue to explain throughout the letter: the gospel is God's power to save, and the righteous live by faith.

Paul boldly declares that he is not ashamed of the gospel.

That statement carried tremendous weight in Paul's day. Rome was the center of a powerful empire. It celebrated military strength, political authority, wealth, education, and human achievement. Yet Paul entered that world proclaiming a Savior who had been crucified on a Roman cross.

To many people, the message of the cross sounded foolish or weak. But Paul knew something Rome did not understand:

The greatest power in the world was not the power of Caesar. It was the power of God revealed through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Is God's Power

Paul does not say that the gospel simply contains power. He says that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

The gospel is more than good advice about becoming a better person. It is the good news of what God has already done through Jesus Christ.

We cannot save ourselves through good works, religious activity, education, money, status, or personal achievement. Salvation comes through Jesus.

The gospel tells us that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Through faith in Him, sinners can be forgiven, made right with God, and given new life.

That means our responsibility is not to make the gospel powerful. God has already placed His power within the message. Our responsibility is to believe it, proclaim it faithfully, and refuse to be ashamed of it.

Salvation Is for Everyone Who Believes

Paul says this salvation is available to everyone who believes.

That word everyone is important.

Your past does not disqualify you.
Your failures do not put you beyond God's reach.
Your background does not prevent you from coming to Christ.

The invitation of the gospel reaches across cultures, nations, social classes, and backgrounds.

Salvation is not earned by being good enough. It is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul says the gospel came “to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” God first entrusted His promises and revelation to Israel, and Jesus Himself came through the Jewish people. But God's saving plan was never intended to stop there. Through Christ, the good news would go to the nations.

The gospel is good news for the whole world.

The Righteousness of God Is Revealed

Paul then introduces one of the greatest themes of Romans: the righteousness of God.

This is where the gospel becomes deeply personal.

We are sinners who cannot produce the perfect righteousness God requires. No amount of human effort can erase our sin or make us righteous before a holy God.

But the gospel reveals something amazing:

God provides the righteousness we cannot produce ourselves.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, the sinner is justified—declared righteous before God.

Think about the beauty of that truth. We stand guilty because of sin, yet through Christ, God offers forgiveness and a right standing with Him.

Our confidence is therefore not:

“Look at how righteous I am.”

Our confidence becomes:

“Look at what Christ has done for me.”

That is grace.

From Faith to Faith

Paul says that God's righteousness is revealed “from faith to faith.”

One helpful way to understand this is:

The Christian life begins with faith, continues by faith, and finishes by faith.

Faith is not merely the doorway through which we enter Christianity. Faith becomes the way we live every day.

We trust God when life makes sense.

We trust God when life does not make sense.

We trust His Word when our feelings tell us something different.

We trust His promises while we are waiting.

We trust His goodness during trials.

We trust His grace after failure.

We trust Christ for our salvation, and then we continue trusting Christ as He transforms our lives.

That is why Scripture declares:

“The righteous will live by faith.”

Rooted Truth

Being rooted in Christ means refusing to build your spiritual life upon your feelings, accomplishments, circumstances, or the approval of other people.

Your roots must go deeper.

They must reach into the truth of the gospel.

Jesus Christ is your foundation.

The deeper your roots grow into the gospel, the less ashamed you will become of standing for Christ. You begin to understand that the gospel you believe is not weakness—it is the power of God for salvation.

Apply It Today

Ask yourself:

Am I truly unashamed of the gospel, or do I sometimes hide my faith because I am afraid of what others might think?

Think about one person in your life who needs to hear about Jesus. Pray for that person today and ask God to give you an opportunity—and the courage—to share the good news with them.

Remember: you do not have to convince someone through your own power. Your responsibility is to faithfully share the gospel. God provides the power.

Today's Rooted Declaration

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. My salvation does not depend on my works but on Christ. I will live by faith, stand on God's Word, and boldly share the good news of Jesus with others.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank You that salvation does not depend upon my ability to make myself righteous, but upon what Jesus has done for me. Help me never to be ashamed of the gospel. Give me courage to stand for Christ and share Your truth with others. Teach me to live by faith every day and allow my life to become deeply rooted in Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

Remember

The gospel is not something we outgrow. It is the truth we grow deeper into.

Be rooted in Christ. Live by faith. Never be ashamed of the gospel.

Today, take one simple step:
Write down Romans 1:16 somewhere you will see it—on a note card, in your journal, or on your phone.

Then choose one person who needs encouragement or needs to hear about Jesus. Pray for that person by name and ask God to give you an opportunity to share your faith with them.

Don’t just believe the gospel—live unashamed of it.
