Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law?^[a] By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law^[b] of faith. ²⁸ For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Rooted in God's Grace

Have you ever felt like your past mistakes were too great for God to forgive?

Maybe you have looked back at things you have done and wondered:

“How could God still accept me?”

Or perhaps you have tried to make yourself right with God by being a better person, doing more good things, praying more, attending church, or trying harder.

But Romans 3:22–24 gives us incredible news:

We don't make ourselves right with God. God makes us right with Him through Jesus Christ.

Paul has already established that every person has sinned. None of us can stand before God and claim that we have perfectly lived according to His standard.

Yet God didn't leave us without hope.

Although all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, we can be justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

That is the beauty of the gospel.

We are guilty.

Jesus paid the price.

God offers grace.

And through faith in Christ, we can be justified by God.

We Have All Fallen Short

Romans 3:23 says:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

There are no exceptions.

We may have different stories.

We may have committed different sins.

We may come from different backgrounds.

But spiritually, we all have the same problem:

We have fallen short of God's perfect standard.

Sometimes we compare ourselves with other people.

We say:

“I'm not as bad as that person.”

“I've never done what they did.”

“I'm a pretty good person.”

But salvation isn't based on whether we are better than someone else.

Imagine two people trying to jump high enough to touch the stars.

One person may jump higher than the other, but neither person can reach them.

In the same way, some people may appear more moral than others, but every one of us still falls short of God's glory.

That means every one of us needs the same thing:

God's grace.

Righteousness Comes Through Faith

Romans 3:22 teaches us that the righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

We need to understand something important:

Faith doesn't earn salvation.

Faith receives what God has already provided.

You cannot purchase God's righteousness.

You cannot work hard enough to deserve it.

You cannot perform enough religious activities to earn it.

God offers righteousness through Jesus Christ, and we receive it through faith.

Think about someone handing you a gift.

You didn't create the gift.

You didn't purchase the gift.

You didn't earn the gift.

Someone else paid for it.

Your responsibility is simply to receive it.

That is a picture of grace.

Jesus accomplished the work.

God provides the gift.

Faith receives it.

What Does It Mean to Be Justified?

The word justified is one of the most important words in Romans.

It gives us the picture of a courtroom.

Imagine standing before a perfectly righteous Judge.

Every sin is known.

Every wrong decision is known.

Every hidden thought is known.

Every selfish motive is known.

There is nothing we can hide from God.

And the evidence says:

Guilty.

But then Jesus steps forward.

At the cross, He took upon Himself the punishment our sins deserved.

Because Jesus paid the price, those who place their faith in Him can be justified before God.

To be justified means that God declares the believing sinner righteous in His sight because of Jesus Christ.

Your past may say:

“Guilty.”

Your failures may say:

“Guilty.”

Your regrets may say:

“Guilty.”

But when you place your faith in Jesus Christ, God gives you a new standing before Him.

You are justified.

Not because you were good enough.

But because Jesus was enough.

Justified Freely

Romans 3:24 tells us something even more amazing.

We are:

“Justified freely by His grace.”

Freely.

That means you cannot buy it.

You cannot earn it.

You cannot deserve it.

If justification depended upon our ability to earn it, none of us could receive it.

That is why God gives it by grace.

Grace is God's undeserved favor toward us.

We deserved judgment because of sin.

But God offered mercy.

We were guilty.

But God offered forgiveness.

We were separated from Him.

But God made reconciliation possible.

We were unable to save ourselves.

So God provided a Savior.

Grace gives us what we could never earn for ourselves.

Jesus Paid the Price

Paul says our justification comes through “the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

Redemption carries the idea of someone being bought back or set free because a price was paid.

Sin placed humanity in bondage.

We could not purchase our own freedom.

We could not rescue ourselves.

But Jesus paid the price.

And the price wasn't money.

The price was His life.

Jesus went to the cross and gave Himself for us.

He took the punishment our sins deserved.

He shed His blood.

He died.

And He rose again.

That means salvation may be freely offered to us, but salvation was not cheap.

Jesus paid the price for our redemption.

When you begin to understand what Jesus paid for you, grace becomes even more amazing.

Stop Trying to Prove Yourself to God

Sometimes we accept God's grace for salvation but then spend the rest of our Christian lives trying to prove ourselves to Him.

We think:

“Maybe God will love me more if I pray longer.”

“Maybe God will accept me more if I read more Scripture.”

“Maybe I can make up for my past by doing enough good things.”

Prayer matters.

Reading Scripture matters.

Obedience matters.

Serving God matters.

But none of those things purchase God's acceptance.

Jesus already paid the price.

We don't obey God so that He will save us.

We obey Him because He has saved us.

We don't serve Him to earn His love.

We serve Him because He first loved us.

We don't live for Jesus to pay Him back.

We could never repay Him.

We live for Jesus because our hearts have been transformed by His grace.

Your Past Does Not Have the Final Word

Some people continue carrying guilt long after they have come to Christ.

The enemy whispers:

“Remember what you did.”

“God could never really forgive that.”

“You'll always be defined by your past.”

But Romans 3 reminds us that our standing before God isn't based upon our past.

It is based upon Jesus Christ.

Your sin may be real.

Your failures may be real.

Your regrets may be real.

But God's grace is also real.

When God justifies you through faith in Christ, your identity is no longer rooted in what you used to be.

Your identity is rooted in who you belong to now.

You belong to Jesus.

Rooted Truth

Being rooted in Christ means understanding where your righteousness comes from.

It doesn't come from your performance.

It doesn't come from your reputation.

It doesn't come from comparing yourself with someone else.

It doesn't come from your religious accomplishments.

Your righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

You have sinned.

You have fallen short.

You cannot save yourself.

But God has provided everything necessary for your salvation through Jesus.

You don't have to spend your life trying to prove yourself worthy.

Instead, you can stand firmly upon God's grace and say:

“I am justified because of what Jesus has done for me.”

That doesn't make us proud.

It makes us grateful.

Apply It Today

Ask yourself:

Am I resting in what Jesus has done for me, or am I still trying to prove myself worthy of God's love?

Maybe you are carrying guilt from something you did years ago.

Maybe you constantly compare yourself with other Christians.

Maybe you believe God accepts you when you perform well but rejects you whenever you fail.

Today, bring those thoughts to Jesus.

Remember:

Your salvation isn't built upon your perfect performance.

It is built upon Christ's finished work.

When your past reminds you of your failures, remind yourself of the cross.

When guilt tells you that you aren't good enough, remember:

Jesus is enough.

Today's Rooted Declaration

I have sinned and fallen short of God's glory, but God has not left me without hope. Through faith in Jesus Christ, I am justified freely by His grace. My righteousness is not based upon my works, my past, or my performance. Jesus paid the price for my redemption. I will rest in what Christ has done and live every day grateful for God's amazing grace.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your grace. I recognize that I have sinned and fallen short of Your glory. I cannot make myself righteous, and I cannot earn my salvation through good works.

Thank You for sending Jesus to do what I could never do for myself. Thank You that He paid the price for my redemption. Thank You that through faith in Christ I can be forgiven, made right with You, and justified by Your grace.

Help me stop trying to prove myself worthy of Your love. When guilt reminds me of my past, remind me of the cross. When I am tempted to depend upon my own goodness, remind me that my righteousness comes through Christ alone.

Let my life become a response of gratitude for everything Jesus has done for me. Keep my faith, identity, and confidence deeply rooted in Christ.

Take five quiet minutes today and think about one mistake, failure, or part of your past that you still struggle to release to God.

Write it down privately:

Something I need to surrender to God's grace is:

________________________________________

Now underneath it, write:

“Jesus paid the price for this too.”

Then read Romans 3:22–24 again slowly.

Afterward, pray:

“Father, I believe what You say about me more than what my guilt says about me. Thank You that through Jesus Christ I can be justified by Your grace.”

Today, whenever guilt or shame tries to remind you of your past, answer it with this truth:

“My past does not define my standing before God. Jesus does.”

☐ I surrendered my guilt to God.
☐ I read Romans 3:22–24 again.
☐ I thanked Jesus for paying the price for my redemption.
☐ I chose to rest in God's grace instead of my performance.

Remember

You don't have to make yourself right with God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, God freely justifies you by His grace.

Jesus paid the price. Grace made the way. Faith receives the gift.
