For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse. ²¹ For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened.

Rooted in Recognizing God

Have you ever stopped and looked at a beautiful sunrise, watched the waves roll onto the shore, looked into a sky filled with stars, or listened to the sound of rain and thought:

“Only God could do this.”

Creation is constantly pointing us toward its Creator.

In Romans 1:20–21, Paul teaches us that God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—can be recognized through what He has made. The world around us is not God, but creation gives testimony to the reality, wisdom, and power of the God who made it.

Every sunrise declares His creativity.

Every ocean reminds us of His power.

Every star points toward His greatness.

Every breath reminds us that life is a gift.

Creation is speaking. The question is: Are we paying attention?

God Has Made Himself Known

Paul tells us that God's invisible attributes have been clearly seen through His creation.

Think about that for a moment.

We cannot physically see God's eternal power with our eyes, but we can see evidence of that power everywhere.

Look at the size of the universe.

Look at the complexity of the human body.

Look at the changing seasons.

Look at the oceans, mountains, plants, animals, and stars.

Creation continually points beyond itself toward the One who created it.

Psalm 19:1 says:

“The heavens declare the glory of God.”

God has surrounded us with reminders of His greatness.

Sometimes we simply become too busy to notice them.

When We Stop Seeing God

Romans 1:21 gives us a warning.

People knew about God, yet they refused to glorify Him as God or give Him thanks.

Their problem wasn't simply a lack of information. Their hearts refused to respond properly to what God had revealed.

And something began to happen.

Their thinking became empty, and their hearts became darkened.

There is an important lesson here:

Seeing evidence of God should lead us to worship God.

It isn't enough merely to admire a sunset.

We should praise the One who created it.

It isn't enough to enjoy our blessings.

We should thank the One who provided them.

It isn't enough to recognize that God exists.

We are called to honor Him as God.

Gratitude Helps Us See Clearly

Paul connects recognizing God with giving thanks.

That is important.

When we stop thanking God, we can slowly begin taking His blessings for granted.

What once amazed us becomes ordinary.

What once caused us to praise becomes something we simply expect.

We can become so familiar with God's blessings that we stop recognizing the One who gave them.

An unthankful heart can begin to say:

“I earned this.”

“I deserve this.”

“I need more.”

But a thankful heart says:

“Everything I have ultimately comes from God.”

Gratitude keeps our spiritual vision clear because it continually redirects our attention toward the Giver.

Don't Let God's Blessings Become Ordinary

Think about how many blessings we experience every day without noticing them.

You woke up this morning.

You took another breath.

The sun rose.

You had another opportunity to pray.

You had another opportunity to open God's Word.

You received another day in which God's mercy was available to you.

And above every earthly blessing stands the greatest gift God has given us:

Jesus Christ.

God loved us enough to send His Son so that through Him we could receive forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life.

Never allow something miraculous to become ordinary simply because you experience it every day.

Seeing God in Difficult Seasons

Seeing God clearly becomes especially important when life becomes difficult.

Problems have a way of narrowing our vision.

When we are hurting, waiting, worried, or disappointed, we can become so focused on the problem in front of us that we stop noticing God's presence around us.

But creation continues preaching.

The sun still rises.

The seasons still change.

The stars still shine.

And God remains God.

Your circumstances may change, but God's character does not change.

He is still faithful.

He is still powerful.

He is still present.

He is still worthy of worship.

Sometimes we need to stop staring at everything that is going wrong and intentionally look for evidence of God's goodness.

Open Your Eyes

God's fingerprints are everywhere.

Sometimes we simply need to slow down enough to notice them.

Today, when you step outside, don't just see a tree.

See the creativity of God.

Don't just see the sky.

Remember the greatness of God.

Don't just feel the warmth of the sun.

Remember the faithfulness of the God who created it.

Don't just count your blessings.

Remember the One who gave them.

The more we recognize God's work around us, the more our hearts should respond with worship and thanksgiving.

Rooted Truth

Being rooted in Christ means learning to see life through eyes of faith.

Creation reminds us that there is a Creator.

His blessings remind us that there is a Provider.

His Word reminds us that there is Truth.

The cross reminds us that there is a Savior.

And every day gives us another opportunity to recognize Him, glorify Him, and thank Him.

Don't simply look at the world around you.

Look for the fingerprints of God within it.

Apply It Today

Ask yourself:

Have I become so busy looking at my problems that I've stopped noticing God's presence, power, and blessings around me?

Today, intentionally slow down.

Look outside.

Notice something God created.

Think about what it reveals about Him.

Then turn what you see into worship.

Instead of simply saying,

“That's beautiful,”

say,

“God, You are amazing. Thank You for allowing me to see Your greatness through what You have made.”

Today's Rooted Declaration

I choose to see God clearly. I will recognize His power through creation, His goodness through His blessings, and His love through Jesus Christ. I will not take God's goodness for granted. Today, I will glorify Him and give Him thanks.

Prayer

Father, open my eyes to see You more clearly. Help me recognize Your power, wisdom, beauty, and goodness through everything You have created. Forgive me for the times I have taken Your blessings for granted or become too busy to notice Your presence.

Give me a thankful heart. When I see creation, remind me of my Creator. When I receive a blessing, remind me of my Provider. When I look at the cross, remind me of my Savior. May everything around me become another reason to worship You and grow deeper in Christ.

Spend five minutes outside today without your phone or other distractions.

Look around and identify three things in God's creation that reveal something about Him.

Write them down:

Beside each one, write what it reminds you about God—His power, creativity, faithfulness, goodness, wisdom, or another attribute.

Then simply pray:

“God, thank You for opening my eyes to see Your greatness.”

☐ I identified three reminders of God's greatness.
☐ I thanked God for what He has made.

Remember

Creation points us toward the Creator. Slow down, open your eyes, and see God more clearly.
