Rooted in God's Kindness

Have you ever stopped to think about how patient God has been with you?

Think about the mistakes you have made.

Think about the times you knew what was right but chose differently.

Think about the moments when God was calling you closer, yet you ignored Him.

And still—God showed you kindness.

Romans 2:4 asks a powerful question: Do we take lightly the riches of God's kindness, restraint, and patience without realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead us to repentance?

Sometimes we look at God's patience and assume everything must be fine.

But God's patience should never be confused with God's approval.

Sometimes God is giving us something incredibly precious:

Time to turn around.

God Has Been Better to Us Than We Deserve

Paul describes God's goodness, forbearance, and patience as riches.

Why?

Because God's mercy toward sinners is greater than we can fully understand.

God knows everything about us.

He knows the sins everyone else sees.

He knows the sins nobody else sees.

He knows our thoughts, motives, attitudes, words, and actions.

Nothing about us is hidden from Him.

And yet He continues showing us mercy.

That should humble us.

We should never look at someone else's sin and think,

“How could they do something like that?”

without remembering how much grace God has shown us.

The closer we get to God, the less interested we should become in comparing ourselves with other people.

Instead, we begin saying:

“Lord, thank You for having mercy on me.”

God's Patience Is Not His Permission

One of the easiest mistakes we can make is believing that because God has not immediately corrected or judged something, He must approve of it.

But God's patience is not permission to continue in sin.

His patience is an opportunity to repent.

Every morning we wake up is another opportunity to turn toward God.

Every time we open the Bible is another opportunity to hear His voice.

Every sermon we hear is another opportunity to respond.

Every conviction from the Holy Spirit is another invitation to come closer.

Every new day is evidence that God has given us another opportunity to say:

“Lord, change me.”

Don't mistake God's silence for approval.

Don't mistake His patience for weakness.

And don't take His grace for granted.

God's patience is mercy giving us room to repent.

God Leads Us to Repentance

Notice the language Paul uses.

God's goodness leads us to repentance.

There is something beautiful about that picture.

God doesn't delight in pushing people away from Himself. His desire is to draw sinners toward Himself.

His kindness says:

“Come back.”

His mercy says:

“You can be forgiven.”

His patience says:

“Turn around while there is still time.”

His grace says:

“You don't have to remain the person you used to be.”

God's kindness should never make us comfortable with sin.

God's kindness should make us want to leave sin behind.

When we begin understanding how good God has been to us, our hearts should respond:

“Lord, after everything You have done for me, I want my life to honor You.”

That is the proper response to grace.

Repentance Is More Than Feeling Sorry

Sometimes we confuse repentance with regret.

We can feel bad about something without actually changing.

We may regret the consequences.

We may regret getting caught.

We may regret hurting someone.

We may even cry over what happened.

But biblical repentance goes deeper than emotion.

Repentance means turning.

It is a change of heart and mind that produces a change in direction.

Repentance says:

“God, I agree with You about my sin, and I don't want to continue walking this way.”

Then we turn toward Christ.

Repentance is not merely turning away from something.

It is turning toward Someone.

We turn from sin and toward Jesus.

Don't Take Grace for Granted

Grace is one of God's greatest gifts, but grace should never become an excuse for careless living.

Sometimes we think:

God will forgive me.

I can repent later.

I've got plenty of time.

But none of us knows how much time we have.

Romans 2 warns us against developing a hard and unrepentant heart.

Every time God convicts us and we repeatedly refuse to respond, our hearts can become less sensitive to His voice.

That is why when God reveals something that needs to change, the best response is not:

“Later.”

The best response is:

“Yes, Lord.”

Don't postpone obedience.

Don't delay repentance.

Don't allow tomorrow to become your favorite day to obey God.

Respond to Him today.

His Kindness Should Change Us

Think about everything God has done for you.

He has shown mercy.

He has provided.

He has protected.

He has forgiven.

He has been patient.

And most importantly, He gave His Son for you.

Jesus went to the cross and carried the punishment our sins deserved.

When we truly understand the cross, repentance stops looking like God trying to take something away from us.

Instead, we realize that God is calling us away from the very things that are destroying us and drawing us toward the life He created us to live.

God's kindness isn't intended to leave us where He found us.

His kindness calls us closer.

Rooted Truth

Being rooted in Christ means allowing God's grace to transform us.

Grace doesn't say:

“Stay exactly where you are.”

Grace says:

“Come to Jesus and let Him change you.”

God has been patient with your past.

He is showing mercy in your present.

And He already knows every struggle you will face in your future.

Yet He still invites you to come closer.

Never allow God's patience to become an excuse to remain unchanged.

Let His goodness soften your heart.

Let His mercy humble you.

Let His patience give you hope.

And let His kindness lead you to repentance.

Apply It Today

Ask yourself:

Is there something God has been speaking to me about that I keep putting off?

Maybe it is an attitude.

A habit.

Unforgiveness.

Pride.

A relationship.

Something you need to stop doing.

Something you need to start doing.

Or an area of your life you have never fully surrendered to Christ.

Don't ignore God's conviction.

Instead of running from Him, run toward Him.

Remember: conviction is not evidence that God has stopped loving you.

It may be evidence that God loves you too much to leave you unchanged.

Today's Rooted Declaration

I will not take God's kindness, mercy, or patience for granted. I recognize that His goodness is calling me closer to Him. When God reveals sin in my life, I will respond with humility and repentance. I choose to turn away from sin and turn toward Jesus.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being patient with me. Thank You for the countless times You have shown me kindness when I did not deserve it. Forgive me for the times I have taken Your grace for granted or mistaken Your patience for permission to continue doing what I know is wrong.

Search my heart and reveal anything that needs to change. Give me the humility to admit when I am wrong and the courage to turn away from sin. Let Your kindness soften my heart instead of allowing my heart to become hardened.

Thank You for Jesus, for the cross, for forgiveness, and for another opportunity to follow You. Lead me into a life of genuine repentance, obedience, and deeper fellowship with You.

“Lord, is there anything in my life that You are asking me to change?”

If you need to forgive—forgive.

If you need to stop something—begin removing it.

If you need to obey something God has already told you—take the first step.

God's kindness is not permission to remain where you are. It is an invitation to turn around and come closer to Him.
